Alphia Schurter

Alphia Schurter was born November, 11, 1893 at Hilltop, Kansas .  He was married to Muriel Alexander on March, 24, 1918 .  They had no children.  He was killed July, 8 1919 at Suchan Valley , Siberia and received the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously.  He was buried in the Christian Apostolic Church Cemetery near Lamont , Kansas .  The circumstances of his death are described in the Pro Patria Press “Newsletter of the 31st Regiment Association” web page as follows.

 

“PFC Alphia Schurter of Hilltop, KS was seriously wounded during his company's attack on red forces in the lower valley. Ignoring his wounds, Schurter continued attacking, firing his BAR to cover his platoon's advance as he struggled forward. Seeing his injuries, Schurter's platoon sergeant had to physically restrain him so his wounds could be treated. It was too late. Schurter died from loss of blood.”
